SidebarOpalis Brings More Automation, Non-Microsoft Support
Acquired by Microsoft in Dec. 2009, Opalis software provides IT process automation (ITPA) that works with other infrastructure management software from BMC, CA, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, and others. (Opalis is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft.) Like Service Manager, Opalis helps customers automate complex IT processes, such as trouble ticketing or provisioning virtual servers, to cut down errors, save costs, and increase service delivery speed, while lessening reliance on readily available experts when problems arise. However, Opalis better handles heterogeneous environment (interfaces with non-Microsoft systems management software) and provides more automation without custom coding. Eventually, integration of Opalis software with Microsoft’s System Center systems management products will allow System Center to effectively compete in the ITPA arena by offering uniform management of heterogeneous systems.
Opalis offers three basic products: integration server software, integration packs, and process catalogs. The server software interacts with IT monitoring and software distribution systems, sets up and executes workflows, and reports results. Integration packs coordinate the information flow between the integration server and the system management infrastructure. Process catalogs are predefined workflows for incident response and virtualization.
