SidebarProducts for Healthcare
Microsoft has a few products designed specifically for healthcare, although it relies heavily on partners who customize its desktop and server platforms, as well as its Dynamics line of business applications, for most of its current healthcare clients.
Acquisitions Aimed at Hospitals
Microsoft’s major acquisitions in healthcare are aimed primarily at hospitals, a large segment of the healthcare software market that is relatively easy for the company’s sales teams to reach.
Azyxxi, acquired in 2006 from a hospital-related software group in Washington, D.C., can generate a consistent, unified view of data collected from clinical, financial, and administrative systems. At the hospital where it was developed, the software is credited with significantly increasing emergency room capacity and reducing wait times, with only modest increases in staff and rooms, because doctors spend less time looking for records while patients languish in beds.
Microsoft is positioning Azyxxi as a solution for relatively mature hospital environments with substantial existing technology investments in best-of-breed niche applications that are not integrated with other systems.
