In Oct. 2001, Microsoft announced preliminary specifications for 14 .NET My Services, revealing several changes since their original announcement (as HailStorm Foundation Services) in Mar. 2001.

One change is with naming: the my prefix at the beginning of each service’s name has been changed to .NET, converting myCalendar into .NET Calendar, for example.

The company has also added three new services, .NET Presence, .NET Lists, and .NET Categories, and eliminated three others (myAddress, myDevices, and myUsage). In addition, some services will offer slightly different functionality than originally proposed.

Microsoft notes that .NET My Services development is in a very early stage, and specific services could be added, eliminated, or changed before they go live.

Storage and Administration Services

Most of the .NET My Services will store information entered by the user, or by applications on the user’s behalf.

.NET Lists, a new service, will create, store, and modify simple lists. This is a generic and highly flexible function that could be useful to developers creating applications based on .NET My Services. For example, a music downloading application could automatically create a list of downloaded songs.
