SidebarRequirements for Next Office, SharePoint
The next version of the Office suite will not require major OS or hardware-level changes, but the next versions of the SharePoint products could require OS, database, and browser upgrades. Microsoft has released previews of the systems requirements of these products, due in early 2010, so that companies can start evaluating their upgrade options.
According to Microsoft, the Office 2010 suite will be supported on Windows XP SP3 (which left Mainstream support in Apr. 2009), Windows Vista, and the upcoming Windows 7. It will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. Microsoft hopes that Office 2010 will run on most PCs that support Office 2007, but some PCs might require hardware upgrades.
SharePoint Server 2010 and Windows SharePoint Services 4.0 (not an official name) will require the following:
- Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, 64-bit editions
- SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008, 64-bit editions
- Internet Explorer (IE) 7 or IE8, and other browsers such as Firefox
