The SharePoint 2010 lineup includes four enterprise search products: Search Server 2010 Express, Search Server 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, and FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint. (A fifth SharePoint product, SharePoint Foundation 2010, does not allow enterprise-wide or external searches.)

Microsoft also offers many other products with search functionality.

Search for Internet Sites

Microsoft sells a license called SharePoint for Internet Sites for companies that want to use SharePoint to deploy a customer-facing Web site. In this case, SharePoint’s search technology can be employed to let external users search the SharePoint site, rather than for enterprise search.

In 2010, Microsoft will offer two editions of SharePoint for Internet Sites, with different search capabilities.

Standard. The Standard edition lets customers deploy the standard SharePoint Server 2010 search functionality.

Enterprise. A new Enterprise edition lets customers use FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint on the back end for search. This gives external-facing SharePoint sites the benefits of that product, including its scalability and advanced tuning features. The technology is identical to the version of FAST for SharePoint used for enterprise search; only the license differs.
