SharePoint Server 2016 was released in May 2016. SharePoint Server 2016 shares its core platform with SharePoint Online and adds extensive integration with Office 365 and related online offerings, helping organizations with hybrid configurations. Organizations that are not planning to move to SharePoint Online should also evaluate this software, which updates SharePoint Server to run on newer Windows Server and SQL Server versions and extend the product’s supported life. New elements include improved eDiscovery features for in-place document hold and timed deletion, large file support, a cloud hybrid search connector, which lets Office 365 index SharePoint Server on-premises for searches, and a hybrid user profile feature that lets on-premises installations take advantage of Delve-managed user profile sites. The version is mostly backward compatible with SharePoint Server 2013, but changes from Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to Transport Layer Security (TLS) in the version could cause issues with HTTPS access and with third-party software.
