SidebarThird-Party Support for MOM
Although MOM intrudes on a market segment that Microsoft formerly left to third parties, most competing ISVs knew that this move was inevitable. Some will continue to directly compete with Microsoft; especially management framework vendors, such as CA Unicenter, HP OpenView, and Tivoli TME, that have entrenched installed bases in heterogeneous shops. However, others will alter their strategies to exploit the opportunities that MOM opens up, especially if the release of MOM dramatically increases awareness of system monitoring.
NetIQ’s Special Relationship
Because Microsoft acquired the MOM technology from NetIQ, used NetIQ developers to help port MOM to Windows 2000, and allowed NetIQ to continue to support its NT 4.0based OnePoint Operations Manager customers, NetIQ knows the MOM technology inside and out. NetIQ has already launched a line of add-on MOM enhancements called Extended Management Packs, or XMPs. (See the chart “MOM Management Packs and Integration Products“.) In the future, NetIQ intends to expand its line of XMPs and plans to add support for non-Windows platforms.
