Visual Studio (VS) Code has become available as a browser-based code editing tool that is integrated with the GitHub Web site. It is also available as a hosted browser-based code editor outside of GitHub. The browser-based version helps developers perform code edits quickly from any device without installing an integrated development environment (IDE).

VS Code is a free cross-platform code editor, with extensible support for development operations like building and debugging applications in all popular programming languages. It is a separate offering from the full VS product, and it is built using different technologies. It has seen rapid adoption since its 2016 debut.

Integration with the GitHub Web site allows users to launch VS Code in the context of the code in a repository by pressing the period key when the Code tab of a repository is displayed. It can also be launched by changing the URL from github.com to github.dev.

The separately hosted VS Code for the Web is at https://vscode.dev.
