Visual Studio Online (VS Online) is a hosted service built on Microsoft’s Team Foundation Server (TFS), with a few added features designed to enhance the online experience. Like TFS, VS Online is used to manage the development, testing, and deployment of an organization’s custom applications. The service is available in several levels:

  • Stakeholder—for users who need to monitor a project’s progress
  • Basic—for users who need access to version control, Agile tools, tools for Java teams, continuous integration, and Web-based test execution
  • Professional—for users who need the Basic-level features, and who also need the included license for Visual Studio Professional 2015
  • Advanced—users can access all of the features in Professional level, plus the test management capabilities.

Organizations can subscribe to VS Online without a Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscription. VS Online Basic is free for the first five users. The sixth and other additional users will pay between US$2 and US$8 per user, per month. VS Online Professional costs US$45 per user per month, and VS Online Advanced costs US$60 per user per month (retail subscription costs).
