Major developments in Microsoft’s database, application development, and Web products since the Mar. 2007 Enterprise Software Roadmap include the following:

  • SQL Server 2008, the follow-on to SQL Server 2005, was formally announced and previews were released
  • A beta of Visual Studio 2008, the next version of Microsoft’s developer tools suite, was released
  • Silverlight 1.0, the initial release of Microsoft’s platform for RIAs, shipped
  • An alpha version of Silverlight 1.1, which adds the .NET Framework, was released
  • Visual Studio 2005 was updated for Vista compatibility
  • Development stopped on Visual FoxPro; the currently available version 9.0 will be the final version
  • BizTalk Server 2006 R2 was released, delivering new features for EDI, RFID tag tracking, and integration with .NET Framework workflow and messaging APIs
  • The Host Integration Server mainframe/midrange integration software was incorporated into BizTalk Server 2006 R2 and discontinued as a separate product
