Major developments for Microsoft’s business applications roadmap since the Jan. 2008 Enterprise Software Roadmap include the following:

  • Exchange and Windows SharePoint Services will be hosted at Microsoft for businesses as part of a suite of online services beginning in the second half of 2008; a similar service is planned for Communications Server in 2009
  • Communications Server 2007 will not be supported on Windows Server 2008, which shipped in Feb. 2008; the first Communications Server version to run on Windows Server 2008 will probably ship no earlier than 2009
  • Visio 14, the code-named next version of Visio, will adopt the Office Fluent UI and support customization in Visual Studio, among other probable improvements discussed at a Feb. 2008 conference
  • Project Portfolio Server 2007 SP1 shipped; it is the only version of the product supported on Windows Server 2008
  • Search Server 2008, the next version of a product formerly called SharePoint Server for search, shipped in
