The new features of MSN slated for fall 2002 will be available only through the MSN 8 desktop client, which replaces MSN Explorer as the default client for MSN Internet Access users. Access to the client will be controlled through Passport—users will be asked to enter a Passport user ID and password, and any user who is not on a free trial or who has not paid his monthly bill will be denied access to the rest of the features in the client.

MSN 8’s improvements over MSN Explorer fall into three main categories: consumer, productivity, and browsing features (most of which are duplicated from other Microsoft software); new parental controls; and an improved e-mail interface. In addition, some tools that help users switch from AOL to MSN Internet Access will be bundled into the client.

Consumer, Productivity, and Browsing Features

MSN 8 will feature approximately 60,000 encyclopedia entries from Encarta; personal financial management features from Microsoft Money; and digital photo editing features from PictureIt.
