Major developments in Microsoft’s systems management products and technology, and in its product lines for security, interoperability, and backup, include the following:

  • Systems Center, a planned configuration and monitoring product, has been cancelled; Microsoft continues to use Systems Center as an umbrella brand for several existing or planned management products, including Systems Management Server, Operations Manager, Report Manager, and Capacity Planning Manager
  • Windows Server will include built-in support for virtualization, running multiple OS instances (called virtual machines) on a single computer, which can significantly simplify management by aiding consolidation of applications onto fewer servers, and migration of applications from one server to another; the feature will first appear sometime after Windows Longhorn Server
  • FrontBridge, a provider of Internet e-mail filtering and archiving services, has been acquired by Microsoft and will continue to offer its e-mail
