Major changes in Microsoft’s systems management roadmap since the Oct. 2007 Enterprise Software Roadmap include the following:

  • Configuration Manager 2007, the successor to Systems Management Server 2003, shipped in Nov. 2007 with many improvements, including support for Windows Server 2008’s Network Access Protection client scanning feature, an expanded “desired configuration management” monitoring feature, and the ability to wake and patch clients running in low-power modes.
  • A release candidate shipped for Operations Manager 2007 SP1, with production release planned for Feb. 2008.
  • The Data Protection Manager 2007 backup product shipped in Nov. 2007, with support for tape media and backup of Exchange, SharePoint, and SQL Server installations.
  • Forefront Security for Exchange Server SP1 shipped in Dec. 2007; the service pack is required to protect servers running Exchange Server 2007 SP1.
  • Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007 Feature Pack 1 was released and incorporated into the
