Major changes in Microsoft’s systems management roadmap since the Dec. 2009 Enterprise Software Roadmap include the following:

  • Invited testers can get access to the next major version of Configuration Manager via a Technology Adoption Program announced in Jan. 2010.
  • When Data Protection Manager 2010 is released in the second quarter of 2010, it will work in concert with online backup solutions and appliances provided by i365 to back up Windows and non-Windows systems, such as IBM, Linux, Novell Netware, Oracle, UNIX, and VMware.
  • Mainstream support for Systems Management Server 2003 and Operations Manager 2005 ended on Jan. 12, 2010. Extended support for both products will end Jan. 13, 2015.
  • The first of the “Stirling” wave of updates to Forefront products arrived in Nov. 2009 with the release of Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (and updates to Forefront Online Protection for Exchange) to support Exchange Server 2010.
  • Updated versions of Microsoft’s firewall,
