Major developments in the Windows OS since the Mar. 2007 Enterprise Software Roadmap include the following:
- Windows 7 (product name to be announced later) will be the next client release of Windows Vista, and will probably be available in 2010. Windows 7 will be available for both 32- and 64-bit (x64) processors
- Microsoft is working on the eighth version of Internet Explorer (IE). If Firefox and other browsers continue to take browser market share from IE, Microsoft could ship this prior to Windows 7 in 2010
- In an effort to make Software Assurance for Windows clients more attractive, several features have been combined into a Desktop Optimization Pack and are now available only to customers with Software Assurance
- Future versions of Windows Server, based on Windows Server 2008, starting with the derivative products such as Compute Cluster edition, will only be available for 64-bit processors
- In order to ensure that the Windows Server Virtualization (hypervisor virtualization)
