Major changes to the Windows roadmap since our last published issue (June 2004) include the following:

  • Windows Server 2003 SP1, a release candidate as of Jan. 2005, has been delayed to the first half of 2005 (from the second half of 2004)
  • Windows support for the x86-64 architecture has been delayed to the first half of 2005; the architecture is used in AMD 64-bit chips and will appear in some new Intel chips as well
  • Windows XP support for the IA-64 (Itanium) 64-bit processor architecture has been cancelled, although support will still be available through some PC manufacturers
  • A Compute Cluster Edition of Windows Server, planned for 2005, will support clusters of servers running high-performance computing applications
  • Some features originally planned for Windows Server 2003 R2 in late 2005 have been postponed to Windows Longhorn Server in 2007; they include the Network Access Protection system for “quarantining” devices when they attach to a corporate LAN.
  • Some Windows Longhorn features
