SidebarComparing Azure-Based Cassandra Offerings
Microsoft provides several options for hosting Apache’s Cassandra open-source database product in Azure. The options have many similarities, but differ in key areas, such as customer control, database size, and compatibility with Cassandra’s query language (CQL).
Apache Cassandra is a NoSQL database product most often used for large database and data warehouse deployments that need high-speed aggregation, providing similar query, database integrity, and durability features of SQL Server. It also includes unique fault tolerance, linear scaling, and hybrid capabilities that make it suitable for large-scale, mission-critical applications.
Apache Cassandra in Azure VMs
Customers can self-install Apache Cassandra on Azure VMs, providing a deployment option most like on-premises. This scenario allows customers to install any version of Apache Cassandra on any size and series of Azure VM and select from several large storage options, allowing for the greatest variety of configuration options.
