  • Azure Databricks is a third-party analytics and collaboration platform, offered as a true Azure service.
  • New SQL query features and structured data management expand the service for traditional SQL analysts.
  • Expanded Azure integration enables jobs to access a wider range of data sources.
  • Updates show Microsoft’s commitment to the service, with plans for high-performance SQL capabilities.

Azure Databricks is a PaaS service based on Databricks technology, a third-party offering that provides Apache and other open-source analytic, orchestration, and collaboration tools for creating and operating machine learning applications. The service is designed for customers working with Azure services, such as Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS), Azure Cosmos DB, and Azure Stream Analytics, who want a full-service machine learning platform based on the Apache Spark analytics engine and SQL.

Overview

Databricks is based on Apache Spark and Apache Spark SQL, along with other components such as Python and R libraries that developers can use to build machine learning models and run those models in production on distributed clusters to create high-performing applications. (For more details, see the sidebar “Understanding Azure Databricks.”)
