  • Windows could be the best choice as a development environment because it can be used to develop for most popular platforms.
  • Subsystems and other technologies enable developers to use Windows for applications that target Linux, Android, iOS, macOS, and the Web.

Windows offers flexibility as a development environment by enabling developers to implement applications that run on Windows and non-Windows platforms. The capabilities could allow development teams to standardize on Windows “dev boxes” within and across teams, improving manageability, consistency, and cost effectiveness.

Why Windows for Development?

Modern applications frequently use a distributed architecture that employs multiple platforms. Back-end services may run on Linux or Windows servers or cloud services, while clients may need to support iOS and Android for mobile users and Windows and macOS for desktop users. Web technologies are usually leveraged in client implementations and for hosted APIs.

The diversity of platform targets can complicate development processes by requiring developers to maintain and switch among development hardware or hosted services to work with different environments.
