  • SQL Server 2022 introduces new availability and backup/restore options that ease management and reduce risk.
  • The new version works better with Azure SQL Managed Instance and Amazon Web Services S3, helping customers use those services with less effort.
  • A new Always On option helps manage geographically separate deployments but introduces new limitations.
  • Some features require database redesign, and some limit SQL Server’s useful life.

SQL Server 2022 became generally available in Nov. 2022, bringing significant updates to traditional availability, disaster recovery, and backup/restore features. New Availability Group (AG) options can help customers who deploy AG across multiple locations ensure applications run smoothly during outages. Azure SQL Managed Instance integration features make the service a better disaster recovery option for on-premises databases and enable customers to copy data from that service to SQL Server on-premises for development, test, or migration. SQL Server 2022 also simplifies use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help customers using AWS VMs.
