Analyst ReportSQL Server 2022 BI: All Roads Lead to the Cloud
- SQL Server 2022 reached general availability in Nov. 2022 with minimal BI and integration updates.
- Some changes bring new opportunities for using the components with Power BI and Azure.
SQL Server 2022 updates to Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Integration Services are limited, but this is not unusual, since Microsoft remains focused on developing cloud replacements, like Power BI and Azure Data Factory. The new version includes some performance updates that could benefit large customers with on-premises deployments and additional features that benefit Power BI customers connecting to complex on-premises Analysis Services deployments.
Analysis Services
Analysis Services is an analytic processing component used to build complex data models used in data mining and other data analytic applications to guide business decisions. Analysis Services has two modes for organizing data into models:
Tabular mode organizes data into tables, columns, and metrics—formats that are more understandable by end users. Tabular mode is the technology used in Excel, Power BI, and Azure Analysis Services and is the only mode supported in the cloud services. (For a detailed comparison, see “Comparing SQL Server Analysis Services Offerings” on page 26 of the Nov. 2020 Update.)
