Version 3.0 of the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) has been released and is officially supported by Microsoft. Companies can use the toolkit to harden older applications against exploits without rewriting or recompiling the applications. Administrators can use Configuration Manager to more efficiently distribute EMET, and users get better notification when attacks are blocked. EMET also works with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, so companies can test applications there.

Easier Deployment, Better Warnings

Many applications contain faults and code vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious users. The latest Windows OSs and application creation tools by default contain several techniques to lessen or eliminate (mitigate) the effectiveness of common attack methods, but older applications built before these mitigation tools were available remain vulnerable to attacks. The EMET is a free vulnerability mitigation toolkit that allows mitigations to be applied to these older applications to make them less vulnerable to malicious exploits. Specifically, EMET contains software to block attacks that attempt to exploit six common vulnerabilities.
