Analyst ReportAzure Open Source Relational Database Services 2020 Update and Roadmap
- Azure Database Services for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB receive important back-end enhancements that improve performance, security, and manageability.
- The services support current versions of each product, so customers should plan to migrate older databases to the new versions.
- The services offer many of the same features as Azure SQL Database, but at substantially lower cost.
- Microsoft’s recent hiring of key contributors to the software will help Microsoft influence its future.
Azure Database Services for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB provide Microsoft-hosted, current community editions of the open source relational database products. The relational database products are popular alternatives to SQL Server because they are cross-platform, simple to deploy and learn, and cost less to license.
The products are available in the following services:
- Azure Database for PostgreSQL
- Azure Database for MySQL
- Azure Database for MariaDB.
Service Overview
The three services use a Platform as a Service (PaaS) model like that of Azure SQL Database (Microsoft’s hosted deployment of SQL Server’s database engine). The services remove the need for customers to perform infrastructure management, and they include high availability, replication, automated backups, and advanced security.
