  • The Azure SQL Database and SQL Managed Instance services offer many combinations of deployment models, purchasing models, and performance tiers.
  • There is no simple formula to choose the right option, as each has feature, licensing, and other limits.
  • Choosing the right options may require a higher level of service than anticipated.

Azure SQL Database and Managed Instace provide a variety of deployment models, purchasing models, and performance tiers that are distinguished by performance and database size limitations, available features, and low-level controls. Choosing the right combination requires comparing database requirements against each offering and selecting a compatible option that provides a balance of performance and cost efficiency.

Service Overview

Azure SQL Database (and now SQL Managed Instance) are multitenant relational database management services hosted in Azure. They are designed for organizations seeking a hosted database service with low cost, quick deployment, scalability, and global reach. The services are based on the latest version of the SQL Server software and offers many of the most common database management features and APIs offered with its parent software, which is traditionally deployed on-premises. The services include high-availability, disaster recovery, and replication features, which also deliver globally distributed data sharing. Databases can be deployed and managed using the same tools used for on-premises SQL Server deployments. Because of the similarities, organizations can leverage existing developer skills and migrate on-premises applications to the service or to create hybrid applications that are deployed on-premises and in Azure.
