Charts & IllustrationsFabric Component Changes—May 2024
Microsoft continues to change the Fabric service, after its initial Nov. 2023 release. The outlined items show new additions to the experience lineup and new data formats supported, announced at the May 2024 Build conference.
Fabric Experience Changes
Experiences (top) are Microsoft-provided components that offer features like machine learning and integration pipelines. At the May 2024 Build conference, Microsoft introduced two changes to the experience lineup. A Real-Time Intelligence experience (top middle) provides a SaaS streaming data solution by combining two previous experiences: Real-Time Data Explorer and Data Activator (which still remains). Microsoft also introduced an option to extend Fabric experiences with Partner Workloads (top right) through a Workload Dev Kit that allows vendors to bring their unique processes into Fabric.
OneLake Data Changes
OneLake introduced support for the Apache Iceberg data format that allows customers to host Snowflake databases (middle) directly inside OneLake. This removes the need to use external connectors or data replication techniques and could allow customers to consolidate their Snowflake environments into Fabric and reduce overall storage cost with minimal impact to existing applications.
