Most Reporting Services competitors offer similar capabilities with comparable reporting and visualization tools, scheduling and automation features, and access to a wide range of data sources, but they vary on their underlying technology, the OSs they target, and integration with development tools. Some major competitors include the following:

SAP Crystal Reports—originally bundled with Visual Studio 2003 through Visual Studio 2008, prior to the release of Reporting Services.

IBM Cognos—a business intelligence and reporting solution that provides access to a variety of data sources, reporting tools, and automated delivery capabilities.

InetSoft—a popular open standards reporting software, based on XML, SOAP, and Java, that specializes in delivering BI reports and dashboards across multiple OSs.

JasperReports—an open source reporting library that can be embedded into any Java application and relies on XML feeds.

Microsoft Access—used by skilled users to establish links to SQL Server databases to populate locally created reports.
