The Power Query add-in for Excel 2013 enables expert users to access a wide variety of data sources and perform sophisticated data transformations for interactive business intelligence (BI), analysis, and other applications. The tool has many similarities with other Microsoft solutions that provide extract, transform, and load (ETL) features.

SQL Server Integration Services

If Power Query is Microsoft’s vision for the future of self-service ETL, SQL Server Integration Services remains the future of IT-controlled, on-premises server-based ETL.

SQL Server Integration Services is a collection of development tools, run-time components, and management utilities that helps organizations build and manage complex ETL processes, during which data is extracted from one or more sources, transformed, and loaded into a destination. Integration Services can be used separately from other SQL Server components; however, customers typically combine it with Analysis Services and Reporting Services to support data analysis, warehousing, ad hoc reporting, and managed reporting.
