R Server Renamed Machine Learning Server

Machine Learning Server (formerly R Server) is an enterprise analytics product that can run open source Python and R language scripts, and it is available for Windows, Linux, and Hadoop deployments. The product was originally called Revolution R Enterprise, and was renamed R Server with the release of SQL Server 2016. It has been renamed again to Machine Learning Server with the release of SQL Server 2017.

Like SQL Server Machine Learning Services, the stand-alone server platform supports a full range of advanced analytics, including predictive modeling and machine learning capabilities. It supports multithreaded and distributed execution of scripts for high performance, and it has in-memory management technology that allows it to work on data larger than physical memory.

Unlike SQL Server Machine Learning Services, the stand-alone server platform comes with several pre-trained neural network models, including sentiment analysis and image analysis (called featurization), that are intended to help organizations quickly deploy new workloads supporting common tasks. The stand-alone server also supports a Hadoop distributed server format and Spark open-source packages for data transformation and queries.
