  • SQL Server 2019 BI and integration will interest only customers with legacy multi-dimensional models or customers adopting Power BI and Azure hosted services.
  • Limited updates and competing capabilities could lead customers away from Integration Services.

SQL Server 2019, expected in late 2019, will likely only appeal to business intelligence (BI) customers who need to migrate away from legacy Analysis Services multi-dimensional workloads or have plans to deploy hybrid environments, leveraging Power BI and other Azure services. Unlike other SQL Server 2019 updates, the BI changes, which include cancelling plans to add BI services to SQL Server for Linux, highlight Microsoft’s desire to move customers to hosted services.

BI and Integration Services Overview

SQL Server provides three services that deliver BI and data integration capabilities. These services can be deployed separately or together to provide a complete data transformation and BI solution.

These on-premises services have matching hosted services and products that are mostly compatible with their on-premises counterparts but are updated more frequently and receive features that are not made available on-premises.
