  • Data Factory continues to advance its Native mode with more data sources, tools to create complex transformations, and improved management and security.
  • Native mode is a solid choice for enterprise ETL workloads, but the larger feature set also increases the complexity and management of pipelines.
  • Integration Services mode is stable but, much like its SQL Server 2019 counterpart, receives minimal attention.

Azure Data Factory, a Microsoft-hosted extract, transform, and load (ETL) service, continues to receive significant investment with new features and integration. Most of the investment is directed at the service’s Native mode configuration. The other configuration, Integration Services mode, is not being dropped or ignored; this mode continues to court on-premises SQL Server customers with better migration tools and licensing options designed to entice customers to Azure.

Service Overview

Azure Data Factory is an enterprise-scale ETL service that helps automate data integration and transformation workloads. It can access data from multiple locations, including on-premises, Azure-hosted, and other database services.
