Cloud Shell

Azure Cloud Shell delivers a command-line interface (CLI) that can be displayed within the Azure portal, providing access to several utilities for managing Azure deployments. The feature can help IT staff and developers use command-line tools (rather than graphical UIs) when working with Azure by reducing the overhead to launch, configure, and maintain the tools, especially when working across multiple workstations.

Service Overview

Cloud Shell is displayed in a height-resizable frame at the bottom of the Azure portal’s browser window when summoned with a tool button at the top of the portal. (See “Cloud Shell Illustration.”) Cloud Shell can also be launched in a separate browser window, Azure Mobile App, Visual Studio Code (via an extension), and some Microsoft documentation sites.

The Shell launches into a Bash or PowerShell session. Several tools are available in the Shell, including the following:

  • The Bash and sh Linux shell interpreters
  • Azure CLI
  • PowerShell for scripting (including management
