New report design and presentation options are limited to Reporting Services deployed in Native mode. The illustration shows a comparison of report design tools and presentation options for SQL Server 2016 Reporting Services deployed in Native mode and SharePoint Integrated mode.

Report design tools include classic paginated reports and charts, similar to previous releases, and are joined with new Power BI reports and mobile dashboards. The available design options include the following:

  • Power BI compatible (PBIX) visualizations are created using the Power BI Desktop (a Windows desktop application). The reports can be used in the Power BI service (not shown) and also deployed to a Web browser via the new Reporting Services portal to be opened in a locally installed Power BI Desktop client.
  • Traditional paginated reports and charts (RDL) are created using Report Builder and Visual Studio. These types of reports can be accessed in the new Web portal.
