Azure SQL Database is a multitenant database management service hosted in Azure. It is based on SQL Server 2016 and offers many of the most common database management features and APIs of its on-premises parent. This includes support for the T-SQL query language and popular development tools. It also supports the use of the same security features, including encryption at rest and encryption in motion. Databases can be deployed and managed using the same tools as on-premises deployments of SQL Server. Because of the commonalities, organizations can leverage existing developer skills and migrate on-premises applications to the service or create hybrid applications that are deployed in both places.

The service is designed for organizations seeking one or more of the following:

  • A lower-cost solution than a full SQL Server implementation
  • A scalable relational database service with low management requirements
  • A quick or temporary database deployment without upfront investment
