Analyst ReportDoes Azure Linux Have a Broader Future?
Ever since it was first introduced under the name Mariner, Azure Linux’s sole official purpose has been to act as a host OS for Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). But speculation continues to swirl about Microsoft’s ambition for its home-grown Linux distribution, particularly given how many pieces of Azure, both public-facing and behind-the-scenes, now depend on having a Linux distribution that is well-adapted to Microsoft’s technology stack.
Despite the obvious question of whether the world really needs another Linux distribution, there are four potential reasons why Microsoft might choose to expand Azure Linux beyond AKS.
Reducing friction. As of May 2025, Azure endorses eight different Linux distributions for use with Azure Virtual Machines, with many of those distributions available in multiple editions, versions, and support channels. Although many customers express a preference for a specific Linux distribution when deploying a VM, others want one that “just works” and would prefer not to have to navigate a bewildering array of options. An officially supported Azure Linux would be an appealing default option for those customers.
