Microsoft 365 Archive is a pay as you go (PAYG) service for long-term storage of inactive SharePoint sites and unlicensed OneDrive accounts. It moves content to lower-cost archive tier while preserving security, permissions, metadata, auditability, and Microsoft Purview compliance features. Archived content is excluded from end-user access and Copilot indexing but remains discoverable through admin and eDiscovery tools. Sites can be reactivated in place when needed.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026)
Microsoft 365 Archive was removed from the Syntex brand (aka SharePoint Premium) and is offered as a stand-alone pay as you go service. In 2025, it was incorporated into the archiving process for unlicensed OneDrive accounts.
Updates include the following:
- File-level archiving allows end users to archive individual SharePoint and OneDrive files
- A new PAYG meter for SharePoint storage works with M365 Archive billing,
