Analyst ReportAzure SQL Database DTUs: There’s a Better Way
- The Azure SQL Database DTU model bundles compute, memory, and storage that are easy to buy but difficult to optimize.
- Customers with dozens or hundreds of DTU databases can accumulate substantial unused capacity that results in excess costs.
- Moving to vCore purchasing offers solid savings with little disruption, while consolidating databases onto SQL Managed Instance or Azure VMs delivers larger savings but requires migration and centralized management.
- Potential savings range from 10% to 85%, depending on utilization, service, and use of reservations and Azure Hybrid Benefit eligibility.
Azure SQL Database customers should rarely choose the Database Transaction Unit (DTU) purchasing model for new production deployments. DTUs provide a simple way to purchase database resources, but simplicity comes at the cost of limited configuration choices, fewer discount options, and a high likelihood of unused capacity. The issue becomes more significant in organizations with many DTU-based databases, where small amounts of waste multiply across the estate.
