Power BI Report Server (PBIRS) is Microsoft’s on-premises report server. It hosts paginated reports built on Report Definition Language (RDL), Power BI reports (.PBIX files) authored in a dedicated Power BI Desktop build, and Excel workbooks, all published to a web portal and administered through Report Server Configuration Manager. Starting with SQL Server 2025, PBIRS replaces SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) as Microsoft’s only on-premises reporting product, and it ships on its own release schedule rather than with SQL Server.

Product: Power BI Report Server

Licensing: Power BI Report Server

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2025–2026)

PBIRS spent the period being promoted from a Power BI side door to the on-premises reporting product. Microsoft broadened its entitlement in June 2025, confirmed the consolidation when SQL Server 2025 shipped without Reporting Services in Nov. 2025, and delivered steady visual and web-authoring work across the Sept. 2025, Jan. 2026, and May 2026 releases.
