The latest major version of Dynamics 365 for Operations Server (previously called Dynamics AX) became generally available in June 2017. Current and upcoming versions of the product are shown above.

The version introduces a new servicing process that involves updating two components of the server product separately: a Platform layer (bottom) that contains low-level features, such as security access and integration between functions, and an Application layer (middle) that contains higher-level user features where customizations, integrations, and add-ons are applied. This process mimics the update process of the Microsoft-hosted Dynamics 365 for Unified Operations online service and is designed to allow the team to update the underlying product without negatively impacting customizations and add-on products.

The Platform layer is typically updated quarterly but can receive updates as often as monthly. Platform updates must be accepted within one year of release to retain Microsoft product support, a policy like those for service packs in the past. Numbering for Platform updates is sequential.
