Dynamics 365 applications are not a single solution, but rather a collection of applications that reside on two separate platforms with different management interfaces, database back-end solutions, and development tools. The illustration highlights the different platforms and the data-sharing solutions Microsoft employs.

Finance, Supply Chain Management, and Commerce

The Finance, Supply Chain Management, and Commerce applications (left), now referred to as Finance + Operations, are the original enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications that began life in the on-premises Dynamics AX product. The applications are unique in Dynamics 365, as they are the only applications Microsoft is still developing as on-premises solutions. This is because the applications are often used in hybrid scenarios where a central deployment resides in the cloud and local deployments reside on-premises. For example, local deployments may be at a manufacturing facility or retail location, where it is necessary to have local data and computing resources for performance or resiliency.
