Lync Online delivers most of the presence, instant messaging (IM), voice and video calling, application sharing, and Web conferencing capabilities of Lync Server 2013. Shown here are the capabilities of the Lync Online service and the Lync Server 2013 software installed on-premises.
An organization’s ability to administer Lync Online has improved with the release of PowerShell administration for Lync Online. In general, Lync Online and Lync Server can be managed with the same PowerShell commands, providing an efficient method for managing a large number of users.
A hybrid deployment option, called split domain, enables an organization to extend an on-premises domain to the organization’s Lync Online users, providing some additional features and a consolidated domain for management. However, none of the Lync Online services can integrate with an organization’s on-premises private branch exchange (PBX) network or an on-premises Lync Enterprise Voice implementation, and the Lync Online services also cannot replace enterprise PBX systems.
