SharePoint servicing varies between the cloud service and on-premises server products. The illustration shows major feature releases and retirements, as well as the life cycle for the on-premises server products.
Online
The cloud service is updated continually by Microsoft and features are released on a schedule set by Microsoft. Customers can generally turn off preview features, but once functionality is generally available, the features are released to all customers, usually over a rollout period of a month or more.
On-Premises
The on-premises server product is installed and managed by the customer with updates applied on their schedule, although failing to apply certain updates can negate support.
Microsoft is currently releasing monthly product updates (PUs) that contain fixes and security updates and two feature updates (FUs) per year, listed here as 24H2, 25H1, 25H2, etc. The feature updates generally arrive in April and September and are included in that month’s product update.
