Category Rule for Server Licenses Rule for CALs
License duration Perpetual licenses for servers and CALs provide the right to use the product indefinitely. They are sold through Enterprise Agreement (EA), Select Plus, Microsoft Products and Services Agreement (MPSA), and some Open programs.

Non-perpetual server licenses and CALs are valid for the duration of a subscription only. They are sold through EA Subscription and Open Value Subscription programs.

Note that several Office 365-branded online services user subscriptions include non-perpetual Skype for Business User CALs (to cover access to on-premises software, generally as part of a hybrid deployment).

New version rights Customers with Software Assurance (SA) coverage as of May 2015 on server licenses and CALs for Lync Server 2013 receive rights to the corresponding Skype for Business 2015 licenses.
