  • Azure Data Box Gateway is locally installed software that simplifies transferring data in and out of Azure.
  • Azure Data Box Edge is an appliance with machine learning and computing features to analyze data at its source, reducing reliance on real-time connections.
  • Gateway and Edge can automatically resolve latency and connectivity issues to ensure data is properly transferred, but their use may increase data transfer costs compared to other options.

Azure Data Box is a family of physical devices and services that help customers transfer data to Azure. The offerings include the following:

Bulk data transfer devices, which Microsoft calls offline data transfer devices. These are stand-alone appliances that customers temporarily connect to on-premises systems to load data for bulk shipping to Azure Storage. (For more details, see “Azure Data Box for Bulk Transfer“.)

Connected data transfer products, which Microsoft calls online data transfer products. These include a gateway service and an appliance that enable certain Azure functionality to run near Internet of Things (IoT) devices, reducing latency and addressing connectivity and security issues.
