Analyst ReportAzure Data Studio Is Retiring: What You Need to Do and When
- Azure Data Studio, long touted as the future for data management in Azure, will be retired in Feb. 2026.
- The retirement will mostly impact data analysts (often non-IT users) who rely on Data Studio for self-service data queries.
- There is no migration option that provides the same feature set, resulting in trade-offs and change for all users.
- Customers should inventory usage and start a transition process immediately.
Microsoft is retiring Azure Data Studio in Feb. 2026, impacting mostly data analysts (in IT and other departments like finance and manufacturing) who will need to find a replacement and migrate their work. Microsoft has two potential offerings, both of which lack the full capabilities of Data Studio. Some users, especially those who collaborate on work with others, use Macs, or work with the open-source databases, will need to consider third-party alternatives. Despite the name, Data Studio is not an Azure service; it is a locally installed application, and users can continue using the product after retirement, but it will not be supported by Microsoft. The Feb. 2026 retirement date should be a target for migration, but there is little risk in using Data Studio for a few months past that date.
