  • Azure Policy is a free service that is critical for deployment governance, and customers should include it in their Azure planning and processes.
  • It allows staff who enforce governance to delegate Azure resource provisioning to users working with Azure, while ensuring security, cost, and compliance requirements.
  • Hundreds of prewritten policies are built in and available in a community repository, reducing the need for custom policy implementations.
  • Policies cannot enforce the way Azure resources are used, such as the OS settings of VMs or schemas used by databases.

Azure Policy helps organizations set and maintain standards for how Azure services are deployed and used within an Azure tenancy. The service, which is built on the Azure Resource Manager deployment framework, can simplify control over deployments at early stages while allowing highly customized control as deployments become more complex. Customers should understand Azure Policy’s capabilities and operational processes and plan for how it will be implemented and maintained to meet business requirements.
