  • Azure Database for PostgreSQL is a PaaS offering that provides current community editions of the open-source database product.
  • Microsoft’s commitment to the service and recognition of the importance of PostgreSQL is evident through recent updates and plans.
  • Customers should be aware that using some new features will make them more dependent on Azure, and make it harder to leave the service in the future.

Azure Database for PostgreSQL is based on current community editions of the open-source SQL database product. PostgreSQL is a popular alternative to Microsoft’s SQL Server relational database product because it costs significantly less to license and is simpler to deploy and learn. It also provides a lower-cost alternative to SQL Server and related services in Azure. Throughout 2023, the PostgreSQL service received updates focused on new versions of the underlying database engine (both major and minor), minor programming and query features, scaling options, and improved management features.
