  • Azure SQL Edge is a small-footprint deployment option, designed for use with IoT and edge devices.
  • It provides local event processing and machine learning features that can increase performance for edge-based scenarios.

Azure SQL Edge (in private preview) is a new deployment option available through Azure SQL Database, Microsoft’s hosted relational database management service based on SQL Server.

Uses

SQL Edge is a deployment option that includes a special edition of SQL Server’s database engine, optimized for low-powered devices, gateways, or edge servers running near Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and a data streaming engine for capturing data.

The database software can work on connected, semi-connected, or infrequently connected devices to provide local storage and analytics to help improve performance and reduce the amount of data transmitted, as compared to transmitting data back to Azure or an on-premises data center for processing. It also provides a small-footprint deployment that may help address device constraints that prevents deploying the full SQL Server product on such devices.
