Analyst ReportAzure SQL Edge Generally Available
Azure SQL Edge, now generally available, is a small-footprint deployment option of the SQL Server database engine that may help address device constraints that prevent deploying the full SQL Server product on such devices. The software is deployed on-premises and can work on connected, semi-connected, or infrequently connected devices, providing local storage, event processing, machine learning, and graph features. SQL Edge is likely to interest organizations with SQL Server skills and applications that need to work with interactive devices like point-of-sale systems or edge servers that support complex devices like robotic manufacturing equipment where the edge server needs to perform analysis locally and take corrective action. The software requires 500MB of memory and includes a subset of the features of Enterprise edition, excluding in-memory and query optimization features. SQL Edge is only available via subscription, is deployed in Docker containers on Linux devices, and requires Kubernetes for container management. Details are discussed in “Azure SQL Database Edge Previews Local Processing” on page 16 of the Sept. 2019 Update and in the Azure Roadmap at https://www.directionsonmicrosoft.com/roadmap/ref/sql-edge.
