Analyst ReportBlue Talon Acquired to Provide Unified Data Governance
The acquisition of Blue Talon brings software and talent for products to help organizations implement and manage consistent data governance policies across multiple data sources, improving data privacy and regulatory compliance. The software sits between applications and data sources, controlling access to data regardless of the calling application. It also offers an obfuscation feature that allows applications to query sensitive data for cumulative results without revealing the underlying data. The features are similar to many existing data and privacy controls built into individual database products. The advantage of Blue Talon’s software is that the software’s management console allows database administrators to create and manage a single set of policies in one location that can be applied to multiple data sources, on-premises, and in hosted data centers. Originally built for big data products, like Hadoop, Blue Talon expanded its offering to work with relational database products, like SQL Server and MySQL, and semi-structured products, like MongoDB. Blue Talon will join Microsoft’s Azure Data Governance group. Database offerings are discussed in the Azure Roadmap at https://www.directionsonmicrosoft.com/members/roadmap/azure.
